We’ve all been there before…moving along in your vehicle until suddenly you hit a traffic jam. While this can be an annoyance, it can be even more irritating when we see there wasn’t any reason for the traffic in the first place. The good news is these “phantom traffic jams” can be migrated with technology Ford cars already have available - adaptive cruise control.

The Ford brand recently teamed up with researchers at Vanderbilt University to conduct a test to see if existing technology could reduce these phantom traffic jams. The result? When the traffic researchers compared the performance of Ford adaptive cruise control to drivers not using the technology in traffic situations, the ACC systems successfully suppressed a phantom traffic jam.

Adaptive cruise control is just one of the advanced safety features found on new Ford cars. Many Ford cars are equipped with advanced driver-assistance features designed to provide an extra set of eyes and hands when you’re behind the wheel. Features such as Lane-Keeping System, Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection, and the Blind Spot Information System all provide alerts to potential hazards and can automatically brake if needed.

The Ford brand is always looking for ways to make their cars safer. This year, the Ford brand is launching the FordCo-Pilot360™, the most advanced suite of standard driver-assist technologies. Ford Co-Pilot360 includes standard automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot information system, lane keeping system, rear backup camera and auto high-beam headlamps.
